Workplace Stressors

Anger- The Last Card in the Workplace

It is important to make anger the last card in the workplace.
When you opt for anger you leave no room for negotiations, analysis or review. it's game over, case closed. That's as good as it gets.
When dealing with a client,as unreasonable as he may be, try not to pull out the anger card. Keep negotiating and presenting different options that may appeal to your customer.
When relating with colleagues, better to leave the issue open or adjourned if you can't come to an agreement, than to close the matter in anger.
When dealing with subordinates who may have obviously blown it, sit on the anger card! Carefully analyse their explanations to fish out the loop holes or mistakes, objectively.
When dealing with your superiors, I daresay you ought not to have the anger card on you or you may soon be on the other side
of the fence!
Let anger remain what it is; the last card for all situations.

Your Job. Your Passion. Your Health

What are you passionate about? What do you always feel like spending most of your productive
hours doing? Does your job fall into this category? On a scale of one to ten how close is your
job to your dream?
Sometimes you may need to change jobs or your career path completely. Other times you may need
to change departments or even the company you work for.
It's also interesting to note that changing your methods of achieving your goals might just be
all you need to do.
Some are in the right career but wrong job description. You may be better of a song writer than
a musician but still be in the music industry.
It's important to know your strengths; do you prefer dealing with people or machines in the
workplace?
When your job is your passion you experience peace and fulfillment.
Now you really need to get thinking...Is your job your passion?

Common Signs of Stress

Chances are that you might be stressed at work.
This may be as a result of a build up of activities outside the workplace not necessarily because of your job.
These "baggages" like unresolved domestic issues are then "carried" to work and you find your work becoming burdensome.

Some common signs of stress are;
 Headaches
 Tiredness
 Stomach aches
Digestive disorders like indigestion, constipation and diarrhoea
Emotional signs like frustration, anxiety and distraction
 Overeating and under eating
                                    Alcohol or drug abuse
                                    Difficulty in sleeping

If you are experiencing most of these symptoms you need to talk to your in-house Health
Specialist if you have one or your physician.

Where is Your First-Aid Box?

Where is the first-aid box in your office? Hmm let me guess… at the reception or under the stairs!
Ok, let me ask an easier question… Where in your dustbin or trash can? Oh sorry, you have one in your office. There are more than enough dustbins to go round!
If we pay so much attention to the elimination of trash, how much more paying even more attention to saving lives?
There should be enough first-aid boxes to go round. Two offices can share one, depending on the population there. At least, the first aid boxes should be within the reach of the users. If you have to run all the way downstairs to your box, then you might as well call the ambulance!
Now tell me the truth, where is your first-aid box?

Should You Care to Know Your Colleagues HIV Status?

Is it really necessary to know your colleagues HIV status? Or if you were HIV positive would you like other members of staff to be informed?
I think it's quite unnecessary. I don't know everyone's status on the streets or everywhere I find myself so why should my office be different? I don't know everyone's health challenges, so why should this be different?
Whether positve or negetive it is your responsibility to protect yourself by carrying out safe practices.
  • Have your own office stationery, afterall we all have our own PCs,desks and even trash cans!
  • Eliminate pins, go for clips instead
  • If any one has a cut and you have to help, use gloves from your office first-aid box.
  • Don't be paranoid! Feel free to give handshakes and official hugs! Be informed and up to date with current trends with HIV
So you see your life doesn't change at all, or what do you think?
